Rubber Recycling Info
Inner tube recycling works!
Unfortunately it can be expensive to recycle bicycle inner tubes and as a result many end up being thrown away. Millions of old inner tubes end up in landfills each year. Many shops who use reclaimed inner tubes to create items refuse to accept tubes containing slime. Rubber is not cost-effective and very difficult to recycle thus it ends up in landfills and won't degrade for many years.
Tires and inner tubes account for over 50% of the rubber produced each year. Each item we make is made from 98% reclaimed & recycled content by weight.
It takes half a barrel of crude oil to produce the rubber for just one truck tire. Every two weeks, Americans wear almost 50 million pounds of rubber off their tires. Thats enough to make 3 1/4 million new tires from scratch. Producting one pound of recycled rubber versus one pound of new rubber requires only 29% of the energy.
ReRides has developed a cleaning system which allows us to use most inner tubes in the construction of our bags including slimed tubes. Any tubes that we cannot use are recycled. We clean, process and manufacture ReRides entirely in the U.S.A.
There are many reasons, why rubber should be reclaimed or recovered;
Recovered rubber can cost half that of natural or synthetic rubber. Recovered rubber has some properties that are better than those of virgin rubber. Producing rubber from reclaim requires less energy in the total production process than does virgin material. It is an excellent way to dispose of unwanted rubber products, which is often difficult. It conserves non-renewable petroleum products, which are used to produce synthetic rubbers. Many useful products are derived from reused rubber products.
